About me:
SOME EXTRACTS FROM THE CRITICS I have been immediately charmed by the beauty and the elegance of Salvatore Iannella?s sculptures. One could see in them the still perceptible conflict between the spirit and the terrestrial matter by which they are shaped. In the ?Cavallo fantastico? (?Fantastic Horse?) I see the ancient heritage extended in an aspiration towards the universe. There the star and the wave communicate, gently and deeply retaken by the noble enterprise of a powerful spiritual intuition. ?Le amiche? (?The Friends?) in their superb tension towards the infinite, appear to me as placed in the middle of the desert; as eroded by its emptiness, in a wait with no limits, with no impatience, elevated to the destiny. Those shapes moulded through the clay are emaciated, they are admirable for their spiritual leanness, but in them it beats the cosmic blood. And if the sculptor?s mind imposes his law, it is without despotism, because this spirit vibrates in the shapes that it arouses, that it moulds, fixes and opens on the mystery of the being. The matter seems voided as by the effect of an elongation, almost by levitation, appealing the divine breath, as under the main preoccupation of opening the appearance to the obscure music of the invisible. Georges Formentelli ? Paris The artistic pruduction of the "sannita" Salvatore Iannella belongs to the cultural tradition wich took roots in the far past of his land. In particular, the paper-pulp sculptures show the Greek and Roman mythological characters together with typical figurations of those ancient civilizations. Next to the god "Giove", resembling Gorgone, we find "La Romana", woman of another epoch, as her irregular profile imprinted in an irregular circumference (as an old coin) seems to show; while the sculptur of a gallant warrior with his crested helmet seems to be an homage to that bold "sannita" people who never wanted surrend themself to the Roman power. These topics are explicated in an original expressionistic manner, which even if it has at the same time clear outlines, the spaces between physiognomic lines are filled by a sea of waves, whose seem to be gushed from the tumultuous human soul. Then, also when the paper-pulp sculpture subjects depart from classic thematics, loosing the continuity and purity of lines - `Raggio di sole´ for example - they always trasfer to the observer a restless of the soul that the roughness of work´s surface materializes, making it perceptible. One could notice the ambivalence characteristic of "Il giorno e la notte" (The Day and the Night), which crest does not only keep apart the light and the dark, but also and especially the good and evil, that in every day life demand us to choose [...] Salvatore Iannella's production of terracotta sculptures is considerably wide and it remains characteristic also when the lines are reduced to the essentiality. [...] His sensitiveness to create lean faces with sorrowful and distant expressions seems to deprive the figure of its frame, to give immediateness to feelings. Marcello Stefanucci - Benevento The artistic world of Salvatore Iannella is filled by essential and mysterious figures. In the epoch in which Art shows itself by expressive and clumsy shapes far from the tradition, the "sannita" artist has been resolutely faithful to his dearest figures in the line of a strictly figurative sculpture. Which is not a limit to his way of express himself. [...] The artist imprints to the clay shapes a character that can be defined 'not ended' which achieves the maximum of expression in masses of the volumes that are sometimes just mentioned. Iannella´s work has a style unity that does not undergoes taste variations, a continuity of a poetic rhythm rising from an unitarian inspiration of true and genuine artist. Sergio Tretola - Pietrelcina (BN) Salvatore Iannella shapes the matter making it pleasant to the glances of whom observes it, achieving to charm by fancy and creativity. In his sculptures is not present anything unnecessary, from the delicate line, audacious sometimes, devoted to a true recognition of that humanity which he feels vibrate first in himself and after in the medley of sculptural materials. Iannella speaks to the heart to whom observes his sculptures, with his never exaspeerated lirism, his refined and plastic compositions.
