Biography: John DeFaro

John DeFaro draws inspiration from the negotiation between the wildness of nature and the order that human works attempt to impose upon it. The work of this painter, photographer, sculptor, designer, colorist and activist moves seamlessly between a radiant palette and stark monochromes, two dimensions and three.
Taking cues from his South Florida environs, DeFaro incorporates organic materials like long, dried seedpods from the Poinciana tree and explores the coexistence of longevity and doom, the saturation of dead objects with the living energy of a previous life. Spare, stark new works delve into deeper conceptual territory.
DeFaro approaches nature as an integral, tangible force in life, drawing on traditions as diverse as the land artists of the 1960’s to the abstract approach favored by many emerging artists. Into a world out of control, this cunning artist steps in with a sense of make-believe bolstered by creativity and exuberance, not lunacy.

“I dig deep into the raw output of the outsider artist riding shotgun with the seasoned craftsperson. Social dynamics summon mythology and my Catholic-school upbringing to demonstrate how changes, given enough time, can turn fact into fiction. I remix curious metaphors, allegorical symbols of faith and otherworldly creatures with abandon.”  John DeFaro 2009.
