Biography: Paula Lang

Biography

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Paula has had a love and passion for beautiful gems and jewelry since childhood. She received a degree in Graphic Design from The University of Illinois. She is a self-taught jewelry designer who works with various metals and gemstones. All pieces are designed and created by the artist. She has sold her work all over the United States including the Art Institute of Chicago’s gift shop. Her worked has been featured at The Oak Park Area Arts Council Artful Object auctions.

Artist's Statement

"As with all my designs, I don't feel the repetition or mass production of my designs by other people would allow my work to remain special. I believe that part of the beauty of my pieces comes from my complete hands-on creation of them. My jewelry is art while also being functional beautiful pieces to wear. I will customize pieces to an individual's personality or their request for gemstone and metal. However, requested pieces may be similar to previous creations but will never be the exactly the same. Time changes how I feel about the raw materials I use, as much as my creative direction changes on how a piece should be perceived.

My inspiration has come from exposure to jewelry and art early in life including many visits to Chicago area museums. One of my favorite places as a child (and still as an adult) is to visit the Gem Room at the Field Museum. Along with trips to the Gem Room, trips to Mexico, Greece, and Spain all helped to define my evolving sense of what modern jewelry design should emulate as an art form."
