A long way from his hometown in New Jersey, USA, William Shevchuk traveled extensively and visited Nicaragua several times before finally settling down in Managua in 2008. Although the Central American country has its ups and downs, William still loves the nature, humble people and lifestyle, which shines through in his photographs. William discusses with us his series of images depicting life in Nicaragua, and what makes him passionate:

Q: What inspired this series of photos of "ordinary" life in Nicaragua?

A: Nicaragua has always inspired me, from my first trip here in 1994 as a tourist, which coaxed me to move here permanently in 1995. I have always found that the crystalline lakes, the majestic volcanoes, and mostly, the lovely and humble people, have inspired me to reflect the utter beauty that is Nicaragua through my lens. There is so much to photograph here, I never tire from roaming the countryside, meeting new people and sharing the experience through my art.

Q: What has been your favorite city or site to photograph?

A: That is a really tough question, as Nicaragua has such a widespread beauty, every town, every pueblo is different. I guess one of my favorite places to photograph has been the "Pueblos Blancos" or the white villages (Towns), which are situated on the Pacific Mesa outside of Managua. The air is fresh, the temperature is cooler, and the opportunities to capture breathtaking images abound.

Q: Other than art/photography, what else are you passionate about?

A: I am passionate about traveling and learning about the world. I have been lucky enough to have traveled to over 33 countries so far. I feel that travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, & narrow-mindedness, and that broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's life.
